TAIPEI, Taiwan, September 15, 2023 — ASUS today announced that the ASUS Foundation, an organization committed to bridging the digital divide, held its 2023 International Youth Volunteer Service Achievement Presentation. The event showcased ASUS Foundation’s philanthropic initiatives through its International Youth Volunteer Program, and invited over a hundred volunteers to share their experiences and insights on their volunteering activities abroad.
This year, ASUS Foundation teamed up with several universities and recruited up to nearly 60 students to participate in volunteer programs across Thailand, India, Kenya, Cambodia, and Singapore. The volunteers conducted lessons on a range of subjects while ASUS Foundation donated recycled computers to the local communities. This collective effort has helped improve the digital learning environment of schools and communities overseas, benefiting more than 6,500 teachers and students.
"We want to bridge the gap in digital learning between urban and rural areas through our international volunteer program,” said Sandy Wei, CEO of ASUS Foundation. “For ASUS and everyone involved, these efforts will provide opportunities for personal growth and foster a sense of global citizenship and the responsibilities that come with it.”
Leaving volunteer footprints around the world
The ASUS International Youth Volunteer Program, established by ASUS Foundation, works with nonprofit organizations and volunteer groups, both domestically and abroad, to establish digital opportunity centers around the world. These centers are created to provide digital learning opportunities for individuals in rural areas and allow them to conveniently access the internet and develop essential computer skills.
A notable example is the partnership between National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) and the children and family-focused charities in Cambodia. In cooperation with these charities, the NYCU team worked on humanitarian architecture projects to construct buildings made out of locally grown bamboos and wood. Depending on local needs, the buildings can then be turned into classrooms, community centers, or residential housings. Additionally, digital opportunity centers were also established, which allowed ASUS’ recycled computers to be implemented into the facilities and enabled volunteers to hold community workshops.
Another example is the volunteer work from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). The NCKU team utilized ASUS smart watches for the first time to provide elderly care services in Singapore, which includes encouraging senior citizens to do light exercises while wearing the intelligent health tracker.
Beyond the footprints in Asia, a team from National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) has been providing volunteer services in Kenya for 15 years. They have helped build information classrooms that included ASUS recycled computers, and give training lessons to local teachers and university students to enhance their computer skills. In addition to their continuous integration of computer software courses, the NTHU team also worked with ASUS to organize the first ever one-day coding competition in Kenya this year. The event included 12 schools and was created in hopes of improving local information technology learning.
“By combining ASUS International Volunteer Service with the Recycled Computer Donation Program, it creates a positive cycle that I believe is beneficial to the world,” shared Ya-I Chang, a volunteer in the 2023 program.
ASUS commitment to giving back to society
Adhering to the spirit of putting people first, ASUS is committed to promoting digital inclusion through various programs. Since 2008, ASUS has been empowering communities around the world that lack digital resources through long-term recycled computer donation programs and international volunteer initiatives. These efforts represent ASUS’ commitment to providing a joyful digital life to people everywhere and creating a more incredible, sustainable future.
ASUS Foundation aims to close the learning gap and promote social mobility through education, creating an inclusive society that thrives together while shaping the values of mutual support and common good.
Inspired by the core value of "Sharing Is Caring" and giving back to society, ASUS Foundation will continue to focus on bridging the digital divide, promoting International Youth Volunteer Program, and encouraging young students to actively participate in volunteer work.
