New tools to unleash DDR5 memory kits
For enthusiasts chasing the highest memory overclocks, ASUS is deploying a revolutionary DRAM slot design in three Z890 motherboards. Available on the ROG Maximus Z890 Extreme, ROG Maximus Z890 Hero and ROG Strix Z890-E Gaming WiFi, this new NitroPath DRAM Technology offers enhanced slot-retention force, and it also reduces noise interference via shorter gold finger pins and optimized signal pathways within the motherboard. The optimized layout ensures faster data transfers between the DRAM and CPU, maximizing a system’s overall performance.
When it comes to memory, there are some new kits on the block that are making headlines. This new variety of DIMM, called Clock Unbuffered DIMM (CUDIMM), features an integrated clock driver on the memory stick itself for improved reliability and stability at high memory speeds.
For users who are concerned about what the process of optimizing these new kits will look like, ASUS Z890 motherboards make it easy with ASUS Enhanced Memory Profile III (AEMP III). This advanced firmware feature empowers users to achieve unparalleled memory performance with cutting-edge CUDIMM memory. Through a two-phase comprehensive tuning process, AEMP III first optimizes the clock driver and then the memory frequency. This results in the best balance between performance and stability, even at cutting-edge speeds of DDR5-8000 or higherii.
For builders who choose traditional UDIMM memory, AEMP II profiles make it easy to optimize memory performance, even with PMIC-restricted memory modules that do not provide an XMP or EXPO profile. Additionally, AEMP II lets users optimize complex memory configurations that include mixed brands and dies, provided the modules share the same capacity. This lets users expand memory capacity easily and still achieve fine-tuned performance.
Getting a memory kit up-to-speed with an XMP profile is fast and easy, but taking the next step toward perfectly optimized memory settings can feel like an endless process of trial-and-error. To streamline the process, ASUS is introducing DIMM Fit. This ASUS-exclusive BIOS feature precisely analyzes individual memory modules to pinpoint potential issues and optimize performance for peak efficiency, compatibility and system stability. Because memory testing takes time, the process can take hours instead of minutes. But if a user is close to memory optimization nirvana, DIMM Fit can help them find an additional bump in stability so that they can achieve sustained performance at higher frequencies or tighter timings.
Thunderbolt 5 makes a splashy entrance
Appearing for the first time in desktop motherboards with the Z890 series, Thunderbolt 5 supports up to 80 Gbps of bi-directional bandwidth, and up to 120 Gbps with Bandwidth Boost for the best display experience. Thunderbolt 5 ports can support up to three 8K displays at 60Hz with DSC, and it is compliant with USB4® V2 for wide interoperability. Daisy-chaining support lets users connect up to five devices per port.
Two ASUS Z890 motherboards feature two Thunderbolt 5 ports: the ROG Maximus Z890 Extreme and the ProArt Z890-Creator WiFi. Builders looking at other ASUS Z890 motherboards can outfit their PC with two Thunderbolt 5 ports using the ASUS ThunderboltEX 5 add-in card. Three Mini DisplayPort IN ports on this card can drive external displays, and it supports up to 100 watts (20V / 5A) of charging with Flexible Quick Charge.
The blistering bandwidth of Thunderbolt allows for some exciting possibilities. The Thunderbolt Share app gives users convenient options for interacting with two PCs. Through it, they can control two PCs with one keyboard and mouse, transfer files with a simple drag-and-drop, keep project folders synchronized and more. And it all happens over a secure, private connection that does not bog down network performance.
Next-gen networking with Wi-Fi 7
With the sole exception of the ASUS Prime Z890-P, which does not have an onboard wireless module, every ASUS Z890 motherboard offers Wi-Fi 7 support, and the ROG and ProArt families offer the absolute best wireless performance. With link speeds up to 6.5Gbps with MLO, 4K QAM, and access to 320MHz channels, the motherboards in these two families give users a premium wireless networking experience.
If a user’s wireless networking needs are more modest, they will be well-served by the TUF Gaming and Prime motherboard families. Featuring many of the latest Wi-Fi 7 advances, these motherboards provide more networking options to match with an Intel Core Ultra (Series 2) processor — and they still offer a very noticeable speed increase over previous options.
All ASUS Z890 motherboards with Wi-Fi 7 support include the ASUS WiFi Q-Antenna and a new ASUS-exclusive software feature that makes it easy to get optimal networking performance. With circuit optimizations to the PCB and enhanced inner pin connectors, the WiFi Q-Antenna delivers exceptional signal throughput for the 5GHz and 6GHz bands. Easy functions in Armoury Crate help users get the most out of this directional antenna. Direction Finder detects signal strength and identifies the ideal positioning for an antenna in just a few steps, while Fast Check provides a quick way to check signal strength and ensure the best connection. With the new Traffic Monitor feature, users can track current usage of Wi-Fi channels across the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands. Then they can use the Channel Switch feature to hop over to a less congested channel for improved network performance.
Install more M.2 SSDs with ROG M.2 PowerBoost
Through ROG M.2 PowerBoost, ASUS is now able to offer up to seven M.2 slots on a single motherboard. Available with the ROG Maximus Z890 motherboards and the ROG Strix Z890-E Gaming WiFi, this feature intelligently converts the +12V power supply rail to +3V so that users can install more drives, even high-speed PCIe® 5.0 options.
No matter how many drives are installed, ROG M.2 PowerBoost helps ensure stable operation under high workloads. With plentiful power on tap, a system can maintain stability to significantly reduce the risk of system crashes and data loss.
Easy PC DIY made easier
Building a PC is far more straightforward than many users think — and it's getting even easier with ASUS Z890 motherboards.
It starts with sweeping changes to the BIOS interface. ASUS has increased the resolution of the BIOS interface to 1920x1080. With this change, users can see more content at a glance, making it easier to survey the available settings and find the ones they need. Perhaps even more valuable to new PC builders, the BIOS Q-Dashboard interface helps bridge the gap between settings in the BIOS and the physical layout of a new motherboard. It provides a perspective view of a user’s exact motherboard model right inside of the BIOS, with the vital components and connections neatly labeled. These visual associations help newer PC builders become familiar with their new hardware and the functionality of their motherboard.
ASUS is also making it easier to toggle ASUS EZ Flash or select a boot device with ASUS MyHotKey. This BIOS feature lets users adjust the functionality of the F3 and F4 buttons during system boot so that they can easily update their BIOS version or select an alternate boot device.
Installing and replacing graphics cards is getting simpler, too. The new PCIe® Slot Q-Release Slim mechanism lets users remove a graphics card without releasing a latch or even pushing a button. Start by pressing on the motherboard with one hand to prevent it from moving while detaching the graphics card. Grip the graphics card at the left side (close to its I/O bracket). Then, slightly tilt the card while pulling upward, and the graphics card will release from the PCIe slot. This quality-of-life feature is not only available on the high-end ROG and ProArt Z890 motherboard options but also on select TUF Gaming and Prime models.
To help users easily install M.2 drives of varying lengths, ASUS has deployed the new M.2 Q-Slide on select motherboards. It includes a latching mechanism that slides along a track to securely hold a drive in place. ASUS has also refreshed the tried-and-true tool-free M.2 Q-Latch system for compatibility with drives of various lengths.
ASUS now also makes it just as easy to install an M.2 heatsink as it is to install the drive itself. These ROG, TUF Gaming, and ProArt Z890 motherboards feature the M.2 Q-Release heatsink for the primary drive slot. Press one button on the side of the mechanism, and the heatsink comes free. To put it back on after installing a drive, simply snap the heatsink into place.
Keeping hardware drivers updated helps ensure the smooth operation of a new PC. But unless users are going out and checking for new drivers on a regular basis, it can be easy to miss an update. To help this problem, ASUS is debuting ASUS DriverHub. This one-stop solution streamlines the process of managing ASUS drivers and utilities to ensure a system stays up-to-date and optimized. For convenience, users are invited to install ASUS DriverHub after OS installation, and it is also readily available as a direct download from the ASUS DriverHub page.
